How it began
I wanted to go to the movies. I was short. I asked anyway.
Fridays meant movies with a big mixed group of friends — parents dropped us off. I already had a job, but that Friday, I was short on movie money. I wanted to go with my friends, and asking one person for the whole amount felt uncomfortable. Then I wondered: what if I asked several friends for a little spare change?
So I did. Politely. Through the school day I asked for spare change — any amount. I didn't necessarily explain it was for the movies. Asking still felt uncomfortable. I was prepared to hear no.
By the end of the day I had enough. I was grateful. I went with my friends.
Later a teacher was upset that I'd been asking classmates for spare change during the school day — then understood it was about the courage to ask, and being willing to hear no.
Over the years, asking has opened doors in my life I never even knew were there. I couldn't control the answer, but I could give myself the chance to hear a yes.
What door in your life might be waiting on the other side of a question you've been afraid to ask?
